Repressed memories
Tom contacted the office last year looking for a household grant. During a home visit, Tom shared that he’d recently been feeling anxious and depressed and that he’d been prescribed anti-depressants. Though being on medication was giving him some peace of mind, the calming effect had not yet taken effect.
During the conversation with his Client Support Worker, Tom shared that he had been sexually abused by an uncle in childhood and that this uncle had recently passed away, triggering repressed memories of the abuse. Until now he’d never actually told anyone and had hoped never to revisit these painful memories.
Our Client Support Worker suggested to Tom that he could benefit from a referral to our psychotherapy service to help him deal with the childhood trauma that appeared to be causing his anxiety and depression.
Tom has now been seeing one of our therapists for several months, and during a recent call with his Client Support Worker, Tom shared that although he knew he still had a long way to go with his recovery, his anxiety levels had reduced and that he really appreciated the opportunity the charity has given him talk through his thoughts and feelings with his therapist on a weekly basis.
