Pam's Story - A listening ear
Pam, a retired schoolteacher, has volunteered as a Blether Buddy befriender for 12 years, after hearing one of our trustees talking about the charity at an event. Pam initially wanted to use her teaching skills to help, but subsequently took on the role of a Blether Buddy befriender as it fitted with her schedule.
She described her befriendee as quiet and reserved, who doesn’t have many friends and unreliable health, but over time they been able to build up their relationship and really get to know each other. Pam says,
“I have very much enjoyed befriending the lady whom I met up with for many years. I like the social contact and hearing their story.”
Pam points out that no matter where you are in London, it can be hard to meet new people, particularly as many people may struggle with shyness, confidence and in some instances health issues and this is why the charity’s befrienders service is invaluable.
In relation to her experience volunteering, Pam said:
“Volunteers are well looked after and can get support at any time. The training courses I have attended have, in the main, been excellent, and for some volunteers it is a qualification to add to their CVs. The socials, boat trip, Christmas party are wonderful. And I was presented to Princess Anne!!”
Pam’s advice for anyone considering volunteering at ScotsCare is:
“Yes, try it. There could be something in it for you.”
