Volunteer profile - John Black

What kind of volunteering do you do?
Over the years I have been on the client helpline, reception, mailings, hosting at Burns’ Lunches, Blether Buddies and escorted clients to monthly meetings.

What impact on the clients do you think volunteering has?
Clients are pleased to speak to someone prepared to listen and understand any problems they may have.

What do you get out of volunteering?
There is a sense of gratification, particularly on the Helpline and Blether Buddy activities.

Does it make it more special to you that you are helping other Scots?
Yes, what makes it special is the shared interest in Scotland.

You recently won an award for your long years of service to the charity. What did that mean to you?
The award is much appreciated for recognising many years of volunteering. The experience and camaraderie have made it all rewarding and enjoyable.

John’s Hidden Hero award from Room to Reward included a free weekend stay in a hotel of his choice for him and his wife, which he enjoyed in the New Forest.
